Chiefs rookie Cyrus Allen's injury threatens to derail potential 2026 breakout

Kansas City Chiefs rookie wideout Cyrus Allen's breakout training camp may be over almost as fast as it began.

On Saturday, the promising 2026 fifth-rounder suffered a lower leg injury after a strong start to Chiefs training camp. ESPN Chiefs reporter Nate Taylor observed Allen "shaking his head and putting his jersey over his face" while being carted off the practice field following a special teams rep.

Earlier in the day, Taylor wrote about Allen's strong first impression, which included being on the receiving end of a pass from Patrick Mahomes on a fade route along the sideline.

"Allen showed the body control to turn away from [cornerback Nohl] Williams and catch the ball away from his body while saying in bounds," Taylor wrote.

With suspect depth at wide receiver, Allen had a chance to quickly rise the depth chart with a continued strong summer. His injury threatens to derail those lofty ambitions.

Rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen's impressive camp on hold after suffering lower leg injury

Allen arrived in Kansas City after spending his senior year in college with the Cincinnati Bearcats, where he led the Big 12 with 13 receiving touchdowns a season ago. As Taylor noted, he "entered camp expecting to compete ... for the No. 4 receiver role" but had quickly positioned himself for a spot in the first-team rotation heading into Week 2 of camp.

Those plans will be on hold following Saturday's practice injury, but a best-case scenario would allow him to return later this preseason. If it's a much more serious season-ender, the Chiefs will once again need former top draft picks Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy to step up.

Both have underwhelmed since entering the league, with Rice, selected No. 55 overall in 2023, limited to 12 games the past two seasons due to injury and suspension while totaling 859 receiving yards during the span. Worthy, a 2024 first-round selection, suffered a Week 1 shoulder injury last season and was held to just 38 receiving yards per game when healthy. He underwent offseason surgery but left Saturday's practice early over another shoulder-related concern.

Allen could have provided a much needed jolt to the unit, and he still might depending on the severity of his injury. It would be absolutely brutal if that's how his rookie year ends.

Hopes were high after his fast start to camp. But after Saturday, the Chiefs are left hoping they haven't already seen the last of him.
