Yankees make questionable trade with Nationals for Luis Garcia Jr.

New York Yankees move on from disastrous 2025 trade deadline, pay high price to Washington Nationals for Luis Garcia Jr.

Bird had been part of the Yankees' ill-fated attempt to revamp their bullpen ahead of the 2025 trade deadline. He had a disastrous 7.24 ERA and a 1.639 WHiP over his 32.1 innings with the Yankees, striking out 35 batters with 13 walks. Bird is the second reliever whom the Yankees acquired last season to be sent elsewhere, as Camilo Doval was shipped to the Pirates on Saturday.

The 26-year-old Cruz had spent most of the season in Triple-A, posting a 3.53 ERA and a 1.262 WHiP over his 35.2 innings, striking out 52 batters with 14 walks. He made his major league debut this season and has done well in his limited action, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out six batters over 5.1 innings.

Cebert had been ranked as the Yankees' 14th-best prospect per MLB.com. A 15th-round selection in the 2025 MLB Draft, Cebert has added a couple of miles per hour of velocity since turning pro. He is regarded as having a solid three-pitch mix with a mid 90s fastball, a sweeper with impressive spin rates and a cutter. Cebert may need to develop an offspeed pitch to remain as a starter but could play up as a power reliever otherwise.

Grable, ranked as the Yankees' 25th-best prospect per MLB.com, is a pure reliever. His plus-plus fastball flirts with triple digits with impressive movement. He also has a mid-80s slider that has been effective against lefties and righties. His power arsenal and ability to throw strikes could make Grable a dominant option in the late innings.

The Yankees needed to address a lineup that has lost outfielders Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton to the Injured List. Garcia will provide another impact bat for a team that needs reinforcements.

The question is where he will play. Two of the Yankees best hitters - Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt - are first basemen. Garcia has experience in the middle of the infield but shifted to first this season due to his defensive limitations. Likewise, Garcia is a left-handed hitter on a roster that needed to find another impact bat from the right side. 

The Yankees have potential options. Rice began his professional career as a catcher and could theoretically shift behind the plate to fill one of the holes in the lineup. Likewise, the Yankees could slot Garcia in the middle of the infield or see how he can handle third.
