Taysom Hill is not your average quarterback. In fact, it's probably not even fair to label him a quarterback.
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton knows that perhaps better than any other coach in the NFL.
Payton coached Hill for five seasons when both were with the New Orleans Saints.
Payton and the Saints claimed Hill off waivers when he was cut by the Green Bay Packers after they picked him up as an undrafted free agent out of the 2027 NFL Draft.
Checking in at 6-foot-2, 221 pounds, Hill is athletic and versatile. When paired with a coach like Payton, who many consider to be an offensive genius, he was able to find many uses for the Saints.
Hill has played quarterback, wide receiver, tight end and running back in the NFL while also being used on special teams as a gunner and even a returner.
Dubbed "The Human Swiss Army Knife," it was Payton who originally figured out how to unlock Hill, and now Payton may have a chance to pick him up once again as a free agent.
Hill, 36, was not re-signed by the Saints this offseason. In the meantime, both he and Payton are expected to be in Canton, Ohio this month for the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction of former Saints quarterback Drew Brees.
Payton is expecting to talk to Hill about potentially joining the Broncos, but it doesn't sound like he's going with the hard sell.
"There's no hurry right now. I'm going to see him [in Canton] in five days," Payton said, according to Jeff Legwold of ESPN. "We'll see where he's at and kind of go from there. ... The key thing is his health and, you know, where he's at mentally. I don't want to assume he wants to play."
Hill hasn't ruled out playing in 2026, so there is the potential for a reunion. Notably, Broncos' head physician Dr. Karim Meijer performed a knee surgery on Hill in 2024 and the multi-talented athlete has followed up with Meijer in Denver since then.
The ties are undoubtedly there, and perhaps nobody knows how to use Hill better than Payton.
"He's done a lot of different things," Payton said.
Hill is one of just four NFL players ever to have notched at least 10 career rushing, receiving and passing touchdowns.
