Nationals' downhill slide continues with James Wood headed to the IL

Just a few short weeks ago, the Washington Nationals appeared to be right in the middle of the NL wild-card race.

Now, after some tough losses that led to the team selling at the 2026 MLB trade deadline, Washington's season got worse with its star player headed to the injured list.

James Wood will miss some time

According to Nationals reporter Spencer Nusbaum, star outfielder James Wood is being placed on the 10-day injured list with a mild oblique strain.

Wood left Monday's game early and underwent testing to determine the severity of the injury. Washington manager Blake Butera believes the team avoided a worst-case scenario and is hopeful Wood's stint on the IL will be close to the minimum length of time.

James Wood is having an incredible season

Wood had an outstanding rookie season in 2025 and has one-upped himself and had an even better sophomore season.

Through 437 at-bats, Wood has posted a slash line of .265/.393/.535, good for a 4.0 WAR and an OPS of .928, the eighth best in MLB.

Wood also has 30 home runs this season, just one shy of the 31 he hit last season. If he is able to return from the injured list within a reasonable time, it's very likely he'll ease past his career high in home runs.

Where will the offense come from?

Washington's success through mid-July was mostly due to the three-headed monster in the lineup of Wood, Luis Garcia and CJ Abrams.

Wood is injured and Garcia was traded on Sunday, leaving Abrams as the key player still in the lineup. Teams aren't going to let Abrams beat them, so other members of the Nationals will need to step up.

If nobody is able to help replace the lost production of Wood for the time being, the Nationals' playoff hopes will continue to decrease throughout the final 50 games of the season.
