Yankees' George Lombard Jr. reflects on impressive MLB debut in win over Cardinals

New York Yankees rookie shortstop and promising prospect George Lombard Jr. enjoyed an impressive MLB regular-season debut as he helped the Yankees claim a 2-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night. 

Specifically, Lombard smashed a home run for his first big-league hit and was responsible for a highlight-reel double play in the top of the second inning. While speaking with reporters after the victory, Lombard acknowledged that practice helped make perfect regarding the defensive skills he flashed in the Bronx.

George Lombard Jr. is no stranger to making plays in the field

"One of those plays you practice," Lombard said about the double play, per Phillip Martinez of SNY. "I’ve made that play countless times in practice. Just get into the game and your body takes over. It’s not much thinking that went into it. Just saw it and tried to make a play on the ball." 

Yankees manager Aaron Boone is clearly hoping Lombard will provide a spark for the club and prove to be an upgrade over Anthony Volpe, who is now spending time at both second base and shortstop in Triple-A. Volpe was once viewed as the franchise's next Derek Jeter, but it's now fair to wonder if Volpe has any real future with the Yankees. 

"Since I can remember, it’s something I always have a love for, a passion for," Lombard added about his defense. "I try to go out there and get a little work in every day and get a little better and help the pitchers with every play that I can make."
