Casey Mize has disastrous performance in first Padres outing

Just before the dust settled on the 2026 MLB trade deadline, the San Diego Padres made a last-minute trade.

San Diego struck a deal with the Detroit Tigers to acquire right-handed pitcher Casey Mize and utilityman Gage Workman.

Mize took the mound in a Padres uniform for the first time on Wednesday, and what followed was a disastrous and uninspiring performance.

Casey Mize couldn't get through the fourth inning

Mize was opposed by the Arizona Diamondbacks, the same team he made his first start of the season against on March 31.

In that first start, Mize allowed just one run across six strong innings. That was not, though, the way that Wednesday's outing played out.

Mize was shelled for eight runs on nine hits in just 3 1/3 innings. It tied his second-shortest start of the season and is the second time in three starts that he has failed to get through the fourth inning.

The eight earned runs charged to Mize were the most he's ever allowed in a start. To make matters worse, Mize made it through the first two innings without allowing a run. He then proceeded to allow more runs (8) than outs recorded (4) in the remainder of his outing.
