Kirby Smart comments on devastating Jalon Walker injury

Atlanta Falcons linebacker Jalon Walker has a wonderful football story.

He's a former five-star recruit who committed to Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs straight out of high school. He then played for Smart and UGA for his whole college career and ultimately won the Butkus Award, which is given annually to the best linebacker in college football.

Walker was selected by the Falcons at No. 15 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, meaning he got to stay in Georgia as a pro. As a rookie, he notched 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery and flashed incredible potential.

Walker's football story hit a bump in the road early on in training camp, as it was revealed on Wednesday that he tore his ACL in practice on Tuesday and will miss the entire 2026 season.

Speaking at his own training camp, Smart was asked about his former star linebacker.

“Such a great leader, great person,” Smart said of Walker (h/t On3). “I think Jalon, better than anybody in this room or probably anybody on our team, understands what football is. He’s seen it. He is an ultimate optimist. I’ll guarantee you he’s got the best attitude and a smile on his face today because he’s got a mom and dad that are just tremendous.”
