Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman might be waking up after slow start

In January, the Cubs signed Bregman to a five-year, $175M contract in free agency, and he severely underperformed for more than half of the season, slashing .236/.333/.353 with nine home runs though 96 games.

His numbers have spiked since July 19, with Bregman producing a .310/.372/.549 slash line with three home runs during the 17-game span. While a limited sample size, it's a promising development for Chicago and far better than the prized free-agent signing continuing to underwhelm.

Bregman's home run against the Blue Jays was particularly impressive considering it came against Louis Varland, arguably the league's best closer this season. He entered Thursday with a 1.09 ERA and a perfect 24-for-24 in save opportunities.

The Cubs (67-49) will need Bregman to stay hot to keep pace with the Milwaukee Brewers (72-43) for first in the NL Central. Chicago is 12-6 overall since he flipped a switch but has only gained a game on Milwaukee, which is 10-6 during the same span.

Even if the Cubs fail to overtake the Brewers, Bregman's production at the plate will be crucial to an extended postseason run. The Cubs, who rank second in the majors in runs per game (5.2), have plenty of firepower, led by MVP frontrunner centerfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong. But with Bregman's bat in the heart of the lineup, he can't be an easy out.

After months of waiting, Bregman may have finally arrived. For the Cubs, it's not a moment too soon and one they hope lasts.
