Bo Bichette makes bold claim about Mets' future amid career uncertainty

There exist far more questions than answers about the future of the last-place New York Mets after the club became a major seller before the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline arrived. 

Meanwhile, Mets infielder Bo Bichette is currently on a three-year, $126M contract that includes opt-outs after both this season and next. During a recent chat with Anthony DiComo of the MLB website, Bichette insisted he is more so focused "on what I’ve got to do" than on his future beyond the end of September. 

Bichette also expressed confidence that the Mets will turn things around in 2027.

"The way I look at it is, I think there’s no doubt this team is going to be better next year," Bichette said. "I really believe that. There’s still a lot of talent in this room, a lot of young talent that’s really hungry, combined with guys that have been around who have done a lot of great things in this game. And then on top of that, typically when you have a season like this, people show up a little bit more motivated. So I think that this group is going to be well prepared to be better next year." 

It now seems like outfielder Juan Soto and shortstop Francisco Lindor will both remain with the Mets through at least the start of the next MLB season. That said, it's difficult to predict who else will be part of the team's lineup and rotation after Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns completed a summer fire sale. 

SNY's Phillip Martinez noted Bichette will make $55.3M for the 2027 campaign if the 28-year-old doesn't opt out. Martinez also shared that "Bichette will likely remain in Queens instead of testing free agency."

Bo Bichette repeats regret about 2026 season

Ahead of the trade deadline, Bichette admitted that he felt the struggling Mets could be in "a different situation" had he "played better early on." Over his first 115 games of the season, he slashed .257/.301/.370 with a .672 OPS, 11 home runs and 56 RBI.

"It hasn’t been my best season for sure," Bichette said on Thursday. "If I played better, maybe the season would be different for the team. But just focused on trying to finish strong."

The 50-66 Mets will open a three-game series at the Pittsburgh Pirates (57-60) on Friday evening.
