Todd Monken rips Browns offense amid Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson competition

The Cleveland Browns were responsible for what was referred to as "a mistake-filled practice for the offense" on Monday amid the competition between veteran Deshaun Watson and second-year pro Shedeur Sanders for the team's starting quarterback job. 

Ahead of Tuesday's practice, first-year Browns head coach Todd Monken spoke openly about how he reacted to certain aspects of Monday's session.

Todd Monken: Mistakes made in practice are "a reflection of coaching"

"I said it to the offense," Monken explained, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "I said it to those guys. I told them that in that moment, what I should’ve done, and what I didn’t do. And as I’ve said to them and us, we’re human. I got fired up. I was p----. That was awful. That was s---- football. And that is going to get me fired up. And I have to own some of that. Obviously, we haven’t coached it well enough. There were other aspects about the two-minute that got me fired up that obviously [were] a reflection of coaching."

Some had suggested that Watson could have essentially won the right to start the Browns' preseason opener at the Chicago Bears this coming Saturday with a solid performance on Monday. That didn't happen, and Monken declined to name his QB1 for the Chicago contest on Tuesday. Nevertheless, Monken insisted he was "jacked about the way our team practiced" outside of the mistakes that left him fuming.

"Coming off of six days, one day off, and how they attacked it [Monday]," Monken added. "I mean, you couldn’t have asked for better energy, attitude, body language — it just wasn’t good at the end for one side. But up until that point, I thought our guys practiced their rear ends off, and I thought it was outstanding for having a day off the day before."

Earlier this week, Monken said that the Sanders-Watson battle was too close to call. According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Monken revealed on Tuesday that Cleveland's unofficial depth chart for the Bears game should say Watson OR Sanders at QB1.

That makes sense, as Monken allegedly plans to give both quarterbacks at least one preseason start. Cleveland hosts the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 22, and the Browns will then wrap the preseason up with a home game versus the New England Patriots on Aug. 27.
