Maryland losing star DE Zahir Mathis to injury puts more pressure on historic recruit Zion Elee

The Maryland Terrapins have suffered a huge loss before the 2026 season has seen one snap played.

Star defensive end Zahir Mathis suffered a season-ending injury in practice. According to Jeff Ermann of 247Sports, a school spokesperson confirmed the injury.

The exact nature of the injury isn't known, and how it happened has yet to be revealed. Without a doubt, though, this is a massive loss for the Terps.

Mathis, a 6-foot-6, 222-pound sophomore EDGE, was a freshman All-American last season and one of the best players on the team heading into 2026.

A former four-star recruit from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's Imhotep Institute, Mathis finished second on the team last season in sacks (six) and tackles for loss (8.5) despite having missed time due to injury.

He recorded at least a half-sack in seven of the 11 games he played in, and he ranked 11th in the Big Ten in total sacks.

Maryland needs Zion Elee to take over with loss of Zahir Mathis

The loss of Mathis is huge for Maryland, but the silver lining is that the Terrapins welcomed in a freshman EDGE in Zion Elee this offseason who is expected to be a big-time pass-rusher.

Elee was a five-star recruit ranked as the No. 1 EDGE in the 2026 class and the No. 5 recruit overall, according to the 247Sports Composite.

He was always going to get some run as a freshman, but now the Terps are going to be counting on him to play a major role and adjust to the college game much faster than originally needed.

Elee is the highest-rated recruit ever in Maryland history, taking over the top spot previously held by Stefon Diggs.
