Report offers notable update on Buccaneers WR Emeka Egbuka's injury status

An injury update on second-year wide receiver Emeka Egbuka provides needed stress relief for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Egbuka limped off the field during Wednesday's joint practice with the New York Jets. Afterward, Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles provided no update on the WR's status. Turns out it's nothing Bowles and company should be overly concerned about.

Report reveals Emeka Egbuka's injury

Per NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo, Egbuka suffered a "minor" toe injury, which corresponded with what third-year running back Bucky Irving said after practice.

"I think he's pretty good. He just got rolled over on," Irving told Garafolo and former Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew in an interview.

Egbuka's injury update finally provides good news for the Buccaneers, who already have enough drama. Defensive tackle Vita Vea, entering the final year of a four-year, $71M deal, requested a trade in July and is still holding in at practices.

Tampa Bay also angered quarterback Baker Mayfield — entering the final year of a three-year, $100M deal — after it failed to sign him to a contract extension. On Tuesday, Mayfield said he's not letting his frustrations with the franchise ruin team chemistry, and the locker room understands "there's a business side of football."

With the futures of Mayfield and Vea uncertain, the 2026 season marks a tipping point for the Buccaneers, who went 8-9 and missed the playoffs last season. A serious injury to Egbuka could cause the franchise to somersault.

Egbuka, pick No. 19 of the 2025 NFL Draft, finished fifth in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting after recording 63 receptions for a team-leading 938 yards and six touchdown catches in 17 games.

Egbuka looks prepared to generate big numbers again in 2026 after making a spectacular catch during Tuesday's joint practice against the Jets. The WR producing more highlights this upcoming season would help the Buccaneers fight for a playoff spot.
