Chiefs' Travis Kelce opens up about Taylor Swift wedding, Patrick Mahomes return from injury

Probably the biggest NFL-related story of the offseason involved Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and entertainment superstar Taylor Swift celebrating their wedding at Madison Square Garden in New York City this past July. 

While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Kelce addressed that headline-grabbing event.

"It was a fun offseason, man. Wedding was the best night of my life," Kelce said, per Perry Miller Carpenter of Heavy. "And I appreciate everybody who came out and celebrated and had fun with us. And, yeah, that’s about all I really got from that night. It was a crazy night. It was full of a lot of celebration, but it’s football, baby." 

Throughout the first two months of 2026, whispers suggested that Kelce would announce his retirement before he married Swift. However, he confirmed in March that he was returning to the Chiefs for what may go down as a "Last Dance" season, and he later said that Swift's professional successes helped him realize he still has "got some juice left to play" at the highest level.

Some members of the football community think Kelce, who will turn 37 years old this coming October, is "done" as it pertains to being an elite player. Over 17 games last season, he tallied 76 receptions for 851 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

"I still got a lot of love for this game," Kelce said on Wednesday. "I still think I can go out and play at a high level, and I wanna go out there and prove myself that I can play at a better level than I did last year. And I think that’s probably the biggest thing for me is making sure that I’m accountable for the guys in this room and every single play that I’m out there."

Meanwhile, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes continues to make a remarkable recovery from the torn ACL and torn LCL he suffered on Dec. 14, 2025. He was fully cleared to participate in training-camp practices earlier this summer, and he seemingly is on track to start Kansas City's Week 1 "Monday Night Football" home game versus the rival Denver Broncos on Sept. 14.

"Everybody knows I love that guy," Kelce said about Mahomes. "That’s a brother to me. You know, so proud of the way he handled adversity from last year to right now. Obviously, we still got about, what, a month — less than a month — 'till the first game, but you see him out here, man. You see him enjoying the game, competing at a high level, not thinking about the knee, and he’s playing his tail off right now and leading us."

Neither Mahomes nor head coach Andy Reid has yet made any guarantee about the signal-caller's status for the Denver game. That said, it sounds like Mahomes is in midseason form as it pertains to serving as the Chiefs' on-the-field CEO. 

"I would say the accountability to everybody around him," Kelce added about Mahomes. "There’s one thing everybody is, you know, you can either lead by example or lead with your voice. I think he’s been more prone to — obviously, he’s always led by example — but to hold somebody accountable man-to-man and try and get the best out of them without them turning on you."
