Mike Vrabel blasts Patriots player after dud in preseason debut

The preseason is the perfect time to make mistakes, but New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel couldn't care less about that.

That's why, following his team's 13-13 tie with the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night, he was far from satisfied with Andy Borregales' performance.

The Venezuelan kicker knocked down a couple of field goals, but he may have also cost his team a meaningless win. It won't be meaningless in the regular season, though.

Following the game, Coach Vrabel didn't hold back on Borregales' three missed field goal attempts.

“Three (misses),” Vrabel said. “I don’t have a message. We’re expected to make them. That’s pro football. They’re banging them in from 60 yards. They got two kickers on the roster, so Andy knows that we have to make those field goals.”

He was referring to a 61-yard field goal Indianapolis Colts kicker Spencer Schrader converted late in the game to even the score at 13.

Borregales converted on a 52-yarder and a 40-yarder. However, he missed three of his attempts, including a would-be game-winner that went wide left.

The Patriots took Borregales with the No. 182 pick last season. He looked solid as a rookie, converting 84.4 percent of his field goal attempts and 96.4 percent of his PATs, according to Football Reference. He was also a perfect 4-for-4 from 50+ yards.

The preseason should always be taken with a grain of salt, but kickers don't get as long a leash as other players, so Borregales might be kicking for his job in the next couple of games.
