Cowboys player gets warning to step it up or get cut

Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys are in the thick of the preseason. The team's first preseason game of the season is on Saturday against reigning Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks.

It's down to them to add new players and cut ties with players who aren't working. That's the point of training camp. You take a look at your roster and assess what changes need to be made. Some players rise up and become more important than expected, while others perhaps need to move on and find a team that's a better fit.

In a Friday piece for Bleacher Report, Moe Moton rattles off one cut candidate for each NFL team, after seeing some things at training camp. "Several battles for third- and fourth-string roles will come down to special teams contributions, but there will also be surprise cuts," he writes.

NFL analyst says Cowboys player could use a "change of scenery"

He believes the Cowboys could stand to part with edge-rusher Marist Liufau, largely because they have a lot of depth at outside linebacker.

"In a transition from inside linebacker to edge-rusher, Liufau is in a tough predicament," Moton notes, adding that James Houston is real competition for Liufau. Last season, Houston finished with the second-most sacks on the team with 5.5 and 19 pressures, according to Pro Football Reference.

"Marist may not be a fit in new defensive coordinator Christian Parker's scheme," Moton adds. "Barring an impressive showing through the preseason, he'll need a change of scenery at a new position."

Finding a new home could be a good thing for Liufau. There are lots of teams out there that need more depth in his skill set.
