Giants' John Harbaugh may have to rethink Cam Skattebo backup

John Harbaugh finally got to take the field with the New York Giants on Saturday and coach them during a loss to the Minnesota Vikings, 13-10.

Just because the Giants lost, that doesn't mean things are trending the wrong way. The preseason is about assessing rookies, backup players and new additions to the lineup and seeing who fits and who doesn't.

But the preseason is also a time to realize when you have problems on the roster, especially when it comes to depth. Now, Harbaugh may have a problem on his hands after seeing a performance from one of his key running backs on Saturday.

Giants may need more running back depth after Saturday showing

Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report has named running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. one of the biggest "losers" of the early preseason games. That's a harsh assessment.

Of course, second-year running back Cam Skattebo is expected to be the lead back for the Giants this season, as long as he's fully recovered from his season-ending injury in 2025. But if he's not, Tracy was expected to be a big part of this lineup.

"But while appearing on the "Giants Huddle" podcast, the team's all-time leading rusher (Tiki Barber) said that he expects Tyrone Tracy to be a big part of the offense in 2026—especially as a receiver," Davenport notes.

He adds that hope is "not going to be the case, however, if Tracy keeps completely whiffing on blitz pickups and getting his quarterback clobbered," referring to a difficult moment in the game that exposed a major concern in pass protection.

Harbaugh needs to take a hard look at his team's running back situation amid Skattebo's progress.
