Watching an important player leave practice with an injury is always concerning, but it appears as if the Chicago Bears may have caught a lucky break (pun intended) when it comes to Kyle Monangai.
The Bears' No. 2 running back left Sunday's training camp practice with what seemed like a knee injury.
But according to ESPN's Adam Schefter's sources, Monangai, 24, is believed to be fine. Initial test results showed no structural damage to his knee, although the team will still perform a follow-up MRI to make sure.
Even though the Bears will once again rely on D'Andre Swift as their featured back, losing Monangai for any significant period of time, especially at the start of the season, would be devastating.
With Chicago's offense predicated on the ground game, even with quarterback Caleb Williams poised to take his game to another level, Swift will need support behind him.
The Bears are going to employ a similar split to last season, when Swift earned 223 carries, and Monangai picked up 169. And Swift ran for 1,087 yards for an average of 4.9 yards per touch while Monangai racked up 783 of his own.
Together, they helped the Bears average 144.5 yards per game as a team, good enough to rank Chicago third in the NFL in rushing.
It's even highly possible Monangai, if healthy, is able to elevate his performance in his second season in the NFL. He averaged 4.6 yards per carry as a rookie after being selected in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Rutgers.
