New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart making it known that he was "puzzled" by the fact that he was forced into the blue medical tent after he took a crunching hit in the Giants' 13-10 preseason loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 15 sparked numerous conversations on national and local sports programs through Monday.
On Monday, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk revealed that chief NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy shared that Dart having to enter the tent during the preseason matchup was "a standard medical timeout." Florio also explained why Dart shouldn’t have been surprised that he was checked for a concussion in this instance.
"Multiple elements likely contributed to the decision," Florio wrote. "...First, [Vikings safety Jay Ward] had a free run at Dart. Second, there was a whiplash effect to Dart’s head when he was hit. Third, Dart’s head struck the artificial surface at MetLife Stadium. Fourth, Dart didn’t immediately move after hitting the ground. Moments like that, where several individually relevant factors line up so cleanly, are rare. Throw in the fact that it was a preseason game — and the last play of a quarter — and there was no downside in checking him out."
First-year Giants head coach John Harbaugh acknowledged that it's probably "frustrating" for Dart that the second-year pro's "history" likely resulted in the 23-year-old having to spend time in the tent this past Saturday. Dart missed two games during his rookie season while in the concussion protocol, and he was checked for a concussion on five different occasions during contests from August 2025 through January.
"The message for all quarterbacks is simple," Florio added, "even if it’s at times easier said than done. Avoid taking big hits like that. Fall in a way that doesn’t result in the helmet striking the turf. And move quickly (if possible) to get up after the play ends."
On Monday, former NFL player and current analyst Domonique Foxworth said that Dart needs to "hop up" more quickly after taking such hits to avoid being sent to the medical tent. In short, it sounds like Dart has little to complain about regarding his latest in-game concussion check.
