Money can't fix everything, but it can fix a lot of things. Especially when it comes to professional sports teams and keeping star players happy.
Defensive lineman Vita Vea and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the latest team to prove that reality on Wednesday afternoon.
Vea had requested a trade from Tampa Bay earlier in training camp due to unhappiness with his contract and the lack of an extension as he was set to enter the final year of his deal.
But the Buccaneers refused to trade him, despite several calls from other teams, and remained determined to get him signed.
They did exactly that on Wednesday by reportedly agreeing to a one-year extension worth $30 million that also includes $6 million in new money for the 2026 season.
ESPN sources: Two-time Pro-Bowl DT Vita Vea and the Buccaneers reached agreement today on a one-year extension for $30 million, tying him to Tampa Bay for two more seasons. He gets $6 million in new money this season.

The vibes around the Buccaneers camp were getting increasingly tense at the start, not only due to Vea's unhappiness and trade request, but also because starting quarterback Baker Mayfield is entering the final year of his contract and looking for a new deal.
While it seems increasingly unlikely that Mayfield sticks in Tampa Bay beyond this season, the Bucs at least know that they have Vea for another two years. And that is an enormous boost for their defense.
Vea is one of the best run-stuffers in the NFL and has been a key cog in the Buccaneers defensive line since he was a first-round pick (No. 12 overall) in the 2018 NFL Draft. He has appeared in two Pro Bowls during his career and is coming off a 2025 season that saw him rack up 4.5 sacks with seven tackles for loss.
Tampa Bay figures to be in contention for the NFC South title this season, and given how close that division has been (and figures to be again), they could not risk losing him going into the season.
