Eagles may have a problem on their hands with key player's contract

The Philadelphia Eagles just won the Super Bowl a few years ago, but that seems like an eternity in Philly. This team, spearheaded by quarterback Jalen Hurts, is absolutely determined to get back to the big game as soon as possible.

One of the most important positions in the NFL is the edge-rusher. It's easy to tell just by looking at those guys' contracts. Edge-rushers are the second-highest-paid position in the league, next to quarterbacks.

But the Eagles may be paying too much for one edge-rusher on their roster. Now, it's coming back to bite them in the form of some criticism.

Philadelphia Eagles' Jonathan Greenard is being called an overpaid star

In a feature out on Wednesday, Garrett Podell of CBS Sports says that the Eagles have one of the most overpaid edge-rushers in the league in Jonathan Greenard. His contract is four years, $98 million, with $50 million in new guarantees.

The Eagles made a big investment in the Pro Bowler, trading two third-round picks to the Minnesota Vikings before signing him to his current deal, but that investment is already raising some concerns. Greenard had more than 12 sacks in both 2023 and 2024, but his sack total fell to just three in 12 games last season. He also ended the season with shoulder surgery.

He also hasn't practiced yet with the Eagles after being on the PUP list with a pectoral strain suffered while weightlifting.

"Philadelphia is banking on a return to health and that 2025 quarterback pressure rate as signs of things to come for the 29-year-old, but the wait is still on to see him at Eagles training camp," Podell notes. "Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio told reporters he'll miss 'a good bit of camp.' It's also uncertain if he'll even be ready for Week 1."

Greenard did post a career-high 18.1% pressure rate in 2025 and had his moments, but that doesn't mask the concerns.
