In the bottom of the seventh inning of Wednesday's game involving the Baltimore Orioles and the New York Yankees, Baltimore slugger Pete Alonso thought he hit a go-ahead home run over the left-field foul pole. However, third base umpire Will Little called it foul, and the decision was later upheld after a lengthy review.
Following what became a 5-3 loss for Baltimore, Alonso shared what he was told about the fly ball.
"Just based on the video, the Hawkeye had it fair in the dugout," Alonso explained, per Phillip Martinez of SNY. "From what it looked like, it was to the right of the pole. What I was told, in order to overturn a call, you need to have two camera angles to confirm it. The only view that shows it fair or foul was down the line, but no other camera angle is available."
After the call was upheld, Alonso struck out swinging. The Yankees then scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning en route to improving to 71-55 on the season. While New York ended Wednesday in possession of the American League's top wild-card playoff berth, 61-66 Baltimore fell 1.5 games back of the final wild-card spot.
"It is what it is," Alonso added. "The video room and the umpire at third base, that’s the only opinions that really made it happen. Kudos to [the Yankees] for breaking the tie that next half-inning. They executed, and they bared down and got it down. And we didn’t."
According to Martinez, MLB Replay Command Center said in a statement that the replay official "could not definitively determine that the ball left the playing field in fair territory." Meanwhile, Yankees reliever Brent Headrick insisted after the game that he "thought it was foul."
Additionally, Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that Brett Weber, who handles replays for the Bronx Bombers, also said the ball was foul.
"Sorry, Pete," Boone said after his team's win.
