Seahawks' deal with Trevon Diggs comes with a big caveat

The Seattle Seahawks made the somewhat shocking decision to sign veteran cornerback Trevon Diggs.

That move came on the heels of their polarizing decision to sign former Detroit Lions first-round pick Terrion Arnold, who's still dealing with legal turmoil.

However, it looks like there won't be many — if any — guarantees for the former All-Pro cornerback.

According to ESPN's Brady Henderson, the former Cowboys star will have to fight for a spot on the 53-man roster, just like all other roster-bubble guys.

Trevon Diggs will have to earn his spot in Seattle

"I don't have the full details of CB Trevon Diggs' one-year deal with the Seahawks but I'm told it's for the minimum salary of $1.215M. Working to see what kind of incentives there may be beyond that," Henderson shared on X. "This is why he talked about wanting to 'earn a spot.'"

That makes sense, given how much Diggs struggled to find a new home after his messy Cowboys exit and short stint with the Green Bay Packers.

He's just 27, but he's struggled with injuries and subpar production for the past couple of years or so, and there were also some concerns about his character and coachability.

The defending Super Bowl champions already have Devon Witherspoon and Josh Jobe, and they also drafted three cornerbacks this offseason before their projected move for Arnold.

They're clearly still unsettled at the position, and the door is wide open for Diggs to prove that he can still play at a high level.

However, regardless of his pedigree and résumé, the former first-team All-Pro will have to earn his stripes again, just like if he were an undrafted free agent.
