Postgame comments show Deshaun Watson has regressed on and off the field

The only thing more pathetic than Deshaun Watson at quarterback is Watson in front of a microphone.

On Saturday, the 2017 first-round pick did all he could to take his name out of an open Cleveland Browns quarterback competition with a dreadful performance on and off the field.

Deshaun Watson makes Browns QB competition easy with awful preseason Week 2 performance

Playing in the second half of a 31-7 preseason Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills, Watson barfed on himself, finishing 5-of-12 for 36 yards and an interception. Cleveland went three-and-out on his first two possessions while losing one yard, and he was pulled after a turnover on downs following his final drive.

In between, he threw his lone interception, overthrowing wide receiver Gage Larvadain.

Somehow, Watson was even worse after the game when speaking to reporters. He responded to fans booing his ugly outing with a total lack of awareness, suggesting "it has nothing to do with performance."

He continued, adding, "It's a little bit more personal than that" while describing the fan conduct as "disrespectful."

Watson, once among the league's more popular quarterbacks, has been reviled by many since more than two dozen women came forward in 2021 with sexual assault lawsuits against him that were later settled. Watson, who received $230M guaranteed from Cleveland after being acquired for three first-round picks in a March 2022 trade, received an 11-game suspension as a result and has been among the league's worst quarterbacks when healthy since returning.

From 2022-24, Watson started 19 games for the Browns, averaging 177.1 yards per game and throwing 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He missed all of last season after suffering a second torn ACL in four months in January 2025.

On Saturday, Watson ripped fans for their response to his October 2024 ACL tear during a 21-14 home loss.

"They cheered," Watson said.

"Does any of that make you regret coming here?" a reporter asked.

"I don't regret anything in my life," Watson responded.

If Watson's play isn't enough for first-year head coach Todd Monken to name second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders the starter, his continued lack of accountability — both on and off the field — and clearly hostile relationship with fans should seal his fate.

Watson has no business being the face of a franchise, even if it is one the Browns deserve. His comments are what's possible when someone facing multiple assault allegations is instead rewarded hundreds of millions of dollars.

After Saturday, Monken's decision should be easy. He doesn't need to see — or hear — anything else. If Watson gets back on the field, things will only get worse.
