Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid is not here to make friends

When Real Madrid first hired Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2010, team director Emilio Butragueno was unequivocal about the reason why. "We didn’t sign Mourinho to make friends," he said, "but to win trophies.”

Some coaches can do both; Mourinho has never been one of them. He's a font of charisma and an endlessly compelling figure, but he is difficult at best and destructive at worst. He is a man who earnestly called himself "The Special One" in a room full of journalists, a man who said legendary midfielder Kevin De Bruyne was "not ready to compete," a man who has no qualms about executing a celebratory knee slide in a three-piece suit just to show his opponents how jazzed he is to beat them. He's Richard III...or maybe he's just Richard Hatch. Either way, Butragueno was right: He is decidedly not here to make friends. He never was.

The trophies, though? He's always been hungry for those. Few coaches have won more of them than Mourinho has, and he remains the only person on earth to lift every single one of Europe's major continental cups. (He won the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan, the Europa League with Porto and Manchester United and the Conference League with Roma.) In that fated stint with Real Madrid, Mourinho lifted three more — the 2011 Copa del Rey, the 2012 La Liga title and the 2012 Supercopa de Espana — and still considered his time there to be something of a failure.

When Real Madrid announced Mourinho's controversial return this summer, 13 years on from his last stint with the club, that trophy drive was why. Madrid had just closed out a dismal season with no silverware and needed a boost. Mourinho felt certain he could provide it.

"A successful season can be viewed in many ways. But in the end, the only pragmatic way is through results," he said. "Finishing a Real Madrid season without trophies is not a successful season.”

That's his mission in 2026-27: Win trophies, no matter what, in whatever style makes doing so possible. And in Real Madrid's season opener against Espanyol on Saturday, we saw that mission on full display. Madrid won the match 2-1 thanks to a late Carlos Espi winner, but the style stole the headlines away from the victory. Madrid was heated, tetchy, skittish, vicious and a little bit silly on its way to three points; in other words, Madrid was already playing in Mourinho's hard-edged "I'm not here to make friends" groove.

Will it work for the team? It's difficult to say. There were stretches of the match where Madrid's disconnect allowed Espanyol, a mid-table side that finished in 11th place last season, to challenge it directly on merit. But there's something to be said for the showbiz spirit that Mourinho pushed his players to inhabit: For the first time in a long time, they looked hungry, even if they didn't necessarily look all that dominant yet.

That's the value that Mourinho can add to the Madrid ecosystem — and for all the faults the team displayed against Espanyol, it was heartening to see it writ large across the match. Mourinho's Madrid isn't going to be making any friends this season, but it looks far more capable of making a trophy final than it has in years — and that, more than anything, is what matters to the club.

Madrid will continue its 2026-27 season on Wednesday, Aug. 26 against Real Sociedad.
