Browns WR Denzel Boston seemingly reacts to Deshaun Watson’s poor pass vs. Bills

The Cleveland Browns faced off against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday afternoon for their penultimate preseason game. Second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders got the start, while veteran signal-caller Deshaun Watson took over in the third quarter.

This quarterback schedule was likely concocted to create a fair division of playing time, as Watson played the entire first half last week.

Sanders impressed during his stint, starting the day 8-of-8 with a touchdown before an unlucky interception put a blemish on his stat line. The same cannot be said for the veteran quarterback, who struggled mightily with his accuracy from the moment he stepped on the field.

Deshaun Watson’s struggles met with boos, reaction from Denzel Boston

Watson finished the day 5-of-12 for 35 yards and an ugly interception, which is concerning given the fact that he was competing against guys battling for roster spots. One of his many lowlights on the day came in the middle of the third quarter, when the ball slipped out of his hand and fell short of a receiver just past the line of scrimmage.

The play was met with a flurry of boos from the Cleveland faithful, and wide receiver Denzel Boston wasn’t impressed with it either. The camera switched to the rookie wideout shortly after the throw, and it showed him subtly shaking his head in disapproval.

Browns head coach Todd Monken will make whatever decision is best for the team when it comes to the quarterback competition, but starting Watson has its drawbacks. Perhaps Boston was just shaking his head at the boos, but the fanbase has already made it clear that Watson does not have their support.

If players are now losing confidence in the potential starter as well, then how can Watson be expected to lead the team? It will be a tough choice for Monken to make, and it’s one that he’ll need supreme confidence in.

Sanders has a cult-like fanbase that will go to war for him — sometimes causing headaches for the team — while the optics of starting Watson may not be the best. Both players have their pros and cons, but it seems like the latter seems to have more of an uphill battle to climb in terms of garnering respect.
