The Los Angeles Lakers underwent a big roster overhaul earlier this offseason, starting with LeBron James' departure.
General manager Rob Pelinka was active in his pursuit of talent to put around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, and he continues to have his eyes set on Jonathan Kuminga.
The former lottery pick is also reportedly on the Minnesota Timberwolves' radar, but J.J. Redick's team might have an edge in this race.
According to NBC Sports' Kurt Helin, Kuminga would rather return to California and sign with the Lakers.
“Which is why Minnesota sits there, with $6 million of its mid-level exception that he can walk right into, no sign-and-trade. He’d get to play with LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards. … Kuminga reportedly likes the idea of playing for the Lakers — who would start him at the four — as a better fit,” Helin wrote.
Kuminga will most likely have to lower his financial aspirations for this to happen.
He's reportedly seeking $20 million per year, which is well outside the Lakers' potential price range under the new CBA. With the Atlanta Hawks not looking to do him any favors in a potential sign-and-trade, he's running out of options.
He might be better off taking a short-term offer to prove that he's worth as much money as he wants.
The potential is there, and getting to play next to two primary scoring options might be just what he needs to finally take a leap after his failed stint with the Golden State Warriors.
