Eagles give encouraging Ja’Quinden Jackson update after leaving game in ambulance

Saturday's preseason game between the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots got off to a scary start when Philadelphia running back Ja’Quinden Jackson was injured on the opening kickoff and had to be removed from the field in an ambulance.

The Eagles quickly offered an update on his status, and it at least seemed to be an encouraging update.

The Eagles announced that Jackson had strength and movement in all of his extremities, but was still being taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Movement and strength are obviously the types of things you want to see in the immediate aftermath of such a situation.

Jackson was initially an undrafted free agent signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars before the 2025 season, but did not make the roster as one of the team's final preseason cuts. He did, however, spend time on their practice squad.

He was signed by the Eagles earlier this month and was hoping to make their roster.

Seeing that sort of play and result is also a good reminder as to why the NFL has gone through so many different kickoff variations in recent years.

Kickoffs have always been one of the most dangerous plays in the game, especially under the old format where players had a full running start down the field.

Over the years, the NFL has gone through different changes to eliminate wedge blocking, changing the touchback spot to reduce the number of returns, to the most recent change where the coverage team and blocking units line up five yards across from each other and can not move until the kick is caught.

No matter the changes, the harsh reality is that football is still a contact sport, and kickoffs are still a part of that, and sometimes unfortunate situations will happen. You can reduce the risk and try to eliminate injuries. You can not eliminate them.
