Head coach Kalen DeBoer ended the Associated Press No. 13 Alabama Crimson Tide's quarterback competition on Saturday by naming Keelon Russell to the role over Austin Mack.
While that was the highest-profile remaining battle heading into the regular season, several more remain with Week 1 just two weeks away.
Below, we examine five prominent power conference QB competitions and predict the winners of each.
Quarterbacks: Faizon Brandon, George MacIntyre | Both quarterbacks are inexperienced, with Brandon, a five-star 2026 high-school recruit, looking to earn the starting job as a true freshman. MacIntyre — a 2025 four-star prospect — only appeared in two home games (vs. FCS East Tennessee State and New Mexico State) last season, going 7-of-9 for 69 yards.
On Saturday, the Vols held their second scrimmage, and while Brandon appeared to remain in the lead, Heupel elected against naming a starter afterward, instead hinting that the decision could wait until Week 1.
Knox News Tennessee beat reporter Adam Sparks pointed to some of Brandon's advantages in the competition, noting he's "a better runner, both in scrambling situations on pass plays and designed quarterback runs.
"Brandon has also been a more consistent deep ball passer," Sparks wrote. Heupel isn't ready to declare a starter, but it's clear where things are headed.
Prediction: BRANDON
Quarterbacks: Hank Brown, Jeremy Hecklinski | Brown backed up Mark Gronowski in 2025 and hasn't started since a disastrous 2024 SEC opener while at Auburn, when he threw three first-half interceptions and was benched at halftime of a loss to Arkansas. Hecklinski also transferred to Iowa last year, arriving from Wake Forest and enters 2026 with two career pass attempts.
Despite being an unknown, Hecklinski put his best foot forward at a recent scrimmage performance described by The Athletic's Scott Dochterman as "perhaps the most impressive Kids' Day passing performance in Kirk Ferentz's 28 seasons as head coach." The numbers justify the bold claim, with Hecklinski finishing 17-of-25 for 205 yards and five touchdowns. Brown, meanwhile, was 9-of-21 for 42 yards.
Assuming both guys are done. Here’s how Iowa’s QBs performed:

Hank Brown: 9-21 for 42 yards. 0 touchdowns, 0 picks.
Jeremy Hecklinski: 17-25 for 205 yards. 5 touchdowns. 0 picks.
Prediction: HECKLINSKI
Quarterbacks: Cutter Boley, Mikey Keene | For the second year in a row, Boley and Keene find themselves competing for a QB1 role. But unlike last season, one will win the job.
Last August, Boley lost a battle with Zach Calzada at Kentucky only to take over in Week 3. Keene, who led the Mountain West in completion percentage in 2023 and 2024 at Fresno State, couldn't win Michigan's starting job over five-star true freshman Bryce Underwood and never played a snap for the Wolverines.
Last week, coach Kenny Dillingham told reporters the two have are at the top of the pecking order after both had "a really good scrimmage," with the competition coming down to the wire. As close as things are, we're leaning toward Boley, whom Dillingham recruited while at Oregon.
"That's a guy who we think has unbelievable potential for us," he told Arizona Sports radio in February.

Boley may have an early opportunity to prove Dillingham correct.
Prediction: BOLEY
Quarterbacks: Tramell Jones Jr., Aaron Philo | Philo "had a head start" in the competition after joining the Gators alongside his former Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, first-year Florida coach Jon Sumrall recently noted, but Jones has kept things tight.

"I think Trammell's grown a ton," Sumrall said. "The biggest growth he's got to make is operating from the line of scrimmage," the former Tulane coach added. "But he's making plays... He's got a bright future."
The gap has closed, but Philo's preexisting knowledge of the offensive scheme may still give him the slight edge heading into Week 1.
Prediction: PHILO
Quarterbacks: Jared Curtis, Blaze Berlowitz, Whit Muschamp |Muschamp is a distant third in the race, with five-star true freshman Curtis trying to win the job over Berlowitz, former Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia's backup last season.
Being the top recruit in program history would seem to give Curtis, who decommitted from Georgia, an advantage in the race, but head coach Clark Lea noted at SEC media day last month that "there weren't any promises made."
More recently, Lea praised Clark's performance during last Saturday's scrimmage, telling reporters it was "probably ... his best day, just start to finish, which is really promising. He's adapting to college football."

That sounds like a coach prepared give his true freshman the starting role.
