Three overlooked first-weekend CFB games with surprisingly high stakes

College football returns this weekend with a schedule that lacks the usual collection of heavyweight clashes. Look beyond the brand names, however, and three games carry consequences that could linger well beyond opening day.

NC State at Virginia

Waiting several weeks for meaningful conference football is apparently overrated.

Virginia and NC State will begin their seasons with an ACC matchup in Charlottesville. That leaves neither program with the luxury of treating Saturday like a dress rehearsal. One of them will walk away 0-1 overall and already chasing the rest of the conference.

The pressure may be slightly greater on Virginia. The Cavaliers are favored by 5.5 points at home after finishing last season with 11 victories, reaching the ACC Championship Game and winning their bowl matchup. That breakthrough raised the standard considerably. It also created an obvious question: Was Virginia built for sustained success, or did nearly everything simply break its way for one terrific season?

NC State represents a dangerous first answer. The Wolfpack have won the past four meetings in the series and enter another season carrying legitimate ACC aspirations. Winning on the road would immediately place them in the conference conversation.

The loser will have plenty of football remaining. Its path becomes noticeably less pleasant before September even arrives.

Jacksonville State at North Dakota State

North Dakota State does not receive a gentle welcome to the FBS level. Instead, the Bison open their new chapter against a Jacksonville State program that already understands how quickly a former FCS power can become dangerous after moving up.

The location makes this one especially fascinating. Jacksonville State must enter the Fargodome as a seven-point underdog against a team playing its first game as an FBS member. Sportsbooks are not even pretending North Dakota State needs an adjustment period.

That respect was earned through years of dominating the subdivision below. The Bison now get an immediate opportunity to prove their formula can survive better weekly competition.

Jacksonville State has something to protect, too. The Gamecocks have developed into a consistent Conference USA threat and return enough talent to contend again. Losing at North Dakota State would not qualify as some humiliating upset, despite what the classification labels might suggest. Still, getting knocked off by the newest FBS arrival would surrender plenty of early credibility.

For North Dakota State, a victory would transform curiosity into a warning.

Memphis at UNLV

The final game of the night may carry the largest postseason consequences.

Memphis and UNLV reside outside college football’s wealthiest conferences, which means neither can afford many mistakes. A Power Four contender may survive an early defeat and spend two months repairing its résumé. Programs attempting to claim the sport’s best remaining postseason opportunity rarely receive the same patience.

UNLV is favored by 5.5 points at Allegiant Stadium, but Memphis is hardly traveling west to provide decorative opposition. Both programs expect to compete for conference championships. Both also understand that an opening loss would remove nearly all margin for error.

The winner gains a valuable non-conference result against a respected opponent and becomes an immediate team to watch nationally. The loser spends the rest of the season needing victories, outside assistance and perhaps a small miracle from the committee room.

It might not carry the shine of two top-10 teams trading touchdowns. The stakes should make up for that quite nicely.
