Spurs have a growing Victor Wembanyama problem that demands attention

The San Antonio Spurs are widely projected to be one of, if not the strongest championship contender next season. With Victor Wembanyama reckoned to be the favorite to win the Most Valuable Player award in the upcoming campaign, expectations are high as they look to win the franchise's sixth title next year.

For now, Wemby is busy playing for Team France in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers. He has played in a couple of friendly matches against Serbia and Nikola Jokic, splitting the outings. However, a lot of people have expressed concern about the reigning Defensive Player of the Year's performance on the offensive end, questioning his rather iffy shot selection and ball handling, particularly during their first game.

Wembanyama was named as the team captain for France in the upcoming tourney, but he will have an even bigger role for the Spurs. He is their clear-cut best player, but his footing as their No. 1 option on the scoring department could end up becoming shaky if his production on the offensive end stagnates.

San Antonio is not foolish enough to veer away from trotting Wemby out as their main option, but the reality is that their team has enough scoring talent to actually fathom installing a different guy in that regard. Should push come to a shove, people could see someone like Dylan Harper be the alpha as a scorer moving forward.

Obviously, the Alien gives the Spurs with a unique advantage on both ends. It would be a waste to have him take on a secondary role. It is also still way too early to sour on his prospect as a tenable No. 1 option on a championship team. Nevertheless, the concerns around him are valid, especially since the Spurs pack more than enough talent to flat-out dominate the league and win multiple titles.

For now, the Spurs have absolutely no reason to panic about their superstar. However, if they start thinking about altering their pecking order on the offensive end, no one should probably blame them, especially if Victor Wembanyama's maturation as a scorer plateaus this year.
