Kareem Hunt visits with NFC team amid search for new NFL home

Coming off a two-season return to the Kansas City Chiefs, Kareem Hunt is back on the hunt (pun intended) for a new NFL team. Based on the most recent news on Tuesday, it appears like he's inching closer from making that happen in the final week of the preseason.

Kareem Hunt visited with the Detroit Lions on Tuesday  

Hunt visited with the Detroit Lions, per the NFL's transaction wire. And while a visit doesn't mean a signing, it's a positive development for the veteran running back. 

Hunt ran for 611 yards in 17 games and four starts during the 2025 season. He averaged just 3.7 yards per carry, but served as a successful goal line threat by scoring eight touchdowns. 

Hunt proved to still be productive in his return stint with the Chiefs 

In 2024, the first season of his second stint with the Chiefs, Hunt totaled 728 yards on 200 rushing attempts across 13 games and eight starts. He found the end zone seven times and then added 117 yards in three games throughout Kansas City's Super Bowl run. 

Hunt has never been able to come close to matching his monster rookie season

Hunt took the NFL by storm as a rookie in 2017, rushing for 1,327 yards in 16 games and scoring 11 total touchdowns. He was named to his lone Pro Bowl in his debut season. However, he followed up that monster campaign with only 824 yards, granted in 11 games.

In between his first and second tenure with the Chiefs, Hunt was with the Browns from 2019-23. He battled injuries and only surpassed 800 yards once - 2020 with 841. 

If the Lions were to sign Hunt, it would be as a backup security option behind featured top back Jahmyr Gibbs, who ran for 1,223 yards, averaged 5.0 yards per touch and recorded 13 touchdowns last season.
