Jonathan Kuminga made bold gamble that could haunt his career

After months of speculation, Jonathan Kuminga and his camp finally settled on a landing spot. As reported, the athletic forward has signed a two-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves, spurning a larger and longer offer from the Los Angeles Lakers. Well, that was a ballsy gamble for the 23-year-old, one that could actually end up haunting his career.

Kuminga wanted to bet on himself netting more than the $12 million annual offer the Lakers had on the table when he inevitably hits the open market anew next year. 

His deal with Minnesota has a player option for the subsequent season, which means that his 2026-27 campaign will basically function as an audition piece for a richer payday.

That being said, this does not change the fact that he took a very risky play here. The Lakers offer was already a very good one. After all, aside from the guaranteed money, he had the perfect role awaiting him. 

With one of the league's absolute best playmakers in Luka Doncic, playing with him, he could have been primed to reach his potential, one that allowed him to be the seventh overall pick a few years ago.

Kuminga's fit in Minnesota is admittedly a sleek one on paper. Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball will get all the attention from opposing defenses, and Kuminga has the skill set as a play finisher to make the Timberwolves a more dynamic and dangerous bunch in the open court.

Still, you can never be too sure in this league. There is always the risk of injury, and Kuminga has not exactly been the easiest player to integrate into schemes for the most part in his career. 

If he repeats the same old mistakes or if the injury bug hits him, Kuminga could very well regret not taking up the Lakers' offer.
