Connor Hellebuyck makes his trade request from Winnipeg Jets official

The Jets issued a statement of their own in response.

Hellebuyck has spent his entire career with the Winnipeg franchise and been one of the best goalies in the entire league for most of it. He is a three-time Vezina Trophy winner, won an MVP award and has at times single-handedly elevated the Jets up to a level the roster probably had no business playing at. 

He is also coming off a gold-medal-winning performance with Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics. All those things together make him the most decorated American-born goalie of all time, and already a slam-dunk Hall of Famer. 

Winnipeg management has simply not consistently done enough to build a better, deeper team around him to take advantage of having one of the best goalies of this era. After a poor offseason in 2025-26, Winnipeg has followed up with another lackluster summer that has not really made any meaningful improvements to the roster. 

In his exit interviews after the 2025-26 season it was pretty clear that Hellebuyck had a lot of frustration starting to build with the state of the franchise and the direction it is going in. He was critical of the complacency with the front office and its inability (or unwillingness) to bring better players to Winnipeg and get them to stay. 

The question now becomes whether or not Winnipeg's front office and general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff can figure out a solution here. This is not a situation where a new contract fix it or more money can make things better. Hellebuyck is not eligible to sign a new contract extension for another four years, while Winnipeg has probably missed any opportunity to make meaningful changes to the roster that could make Hellebuyck happy.

The fact that Hellebuyck made the request earlier this offseason and has not only remained committed to it, but is now going public with it, also seems to indicate there is not any mending of the relationship that can take place. 

Cheveldayoff's entire tenure as Winnipeg general manager has been all about methodical roster building. He rarely gets big free agents or makes significant trades unless he is forced into it. He might be getting forced into it here.
