Sal Stewart sets Cincinnati Reds modern rookie RBI record

It did not take long for third baseman Sal Stewart to stand alone in the Cincinnati Reds history books.

Stewart had tied former outfielder Jim Greengrass (1953) for the modern Reds rookie RBI record on Wednesday when he drove in his 100th run of the season. In doing so, Stewart also joined elite company as the seventh rookie in the 21st century to reach the century mark.

Stewart placed himself apart on Friday. He belted a 3-1 curveball from David Peterson in the top of the fifth inning for a solo home run, bringing his season RBI total to 101. Stewart later drove in another run with an infield single in the top of the sixth inning as the Reds held on for a 10-8 victory.

Stewart has become the prohibitive favorite for the NL Rookie of the Year award. The Reds third baseman ended Friday with a .263/.336/.478 batting line in his 586 plate appearances, hitting 29 homers and 24 doubles while driving in a major league-leading 102 runs on the season. He has quickly established himself as a potential cornerstone for the franchise going forward.
