Andy Green makes feelings about future with Mets clear amid manager rumors

Big-spending New York Mets owner Steve Cohen made it known earlier this month that he felt it would be "great" if interim manager Andy Green tossed "his hat into the ring" regarding the club's full-time managerial job. 

Since then, multiple reports have indicated that Green, who was serving as the club's senior vice president of player development before he was handed his current role in late June, plans to return to the Mets' front office this coming fall. During a chat with MLB insiders Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic, Green seemed to confirm his plans. 

Andy Green picking family over serving as Mets manager?

"The family consideration is real," Green explained. "We’re all trying to do the best we can balancing career and family. My [twin daughters, Emily and Anna] have one year left in high school. I want to be present as much as possible, like any dad would."

Under Green, the last-place Mets became fun to follow for fans of the club following the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline. From the morning of Aug. 4 through the night of Aug. 25, the Mets went from 47-66 to 60-72. While New York then suffered back-to-back blowout losses to the Milwaukee Brewers, 83-51 Milwaukee possesses the best record in the big leagues. 

Do Andy Green's comments show he may not want different job with Mets? 

A report from this week suggested that Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns could name Green the club's first general manager since Stearns began working for the organization in October 2023. It's unclear if Green would accept such a role. 

"A GM’s job is even more of a grind than a manager’s, rarely abating in intensity even after the season ends," Rosenthal and Sammon noted. "Front-office roles, though, generally offer greater scheduling flexibility. Executives sometimes can create time for seminal moments in their children’s lives – a major sporting event or theater performance, for example, or an awards ceremony."

Stearns said that Green choosing family over becoming the Mets' full-time skipper is "laudable and consistent with who he’s been during his time here." Meanwhile, Cohen added that he is taking Green "at face value" regarding a desire to go back to the front office.

For now, Green will try to keep the current Mets squad as watchable as possible, beginning with Friday night's home game against the Houston Astros (67-67)
