Three NFL veterans closer to retirement than you may think

Aaron Rodgers and Calais Campbell have reached the stage where every season feels like a farewell tour. Retirement would hardly qualify as breaking news for either one.

These three NFL veterans are different. None has reached 40, but injuries, uncertain roles and previous exits suggest the end could arrive much sooner than expected.

Tyreek Hill faces an uncertain road back

Tyreek Hill remains one of the biggest names in football, but his future looks nothing like it did a few years ago.

The Miami Dolphins released Hill in February after his 2025 season ended with a torn ACL and dislocated knee. He still had another surgery ahead of him at the time and became a free agent without a clear landing spot.

Hill turns 33 next March. That is not ancient, even by NFL standards, but speed has always been the foundation of his game. Recovering from such a serious injury is difficult enough. Returning with the same explosiveness that made him nearly impossible to cover is another problem entirely.

He could still find a contender willing to gamble on his recovery. However, teams are unlikely to offer much guaranteed money before seeing him run, cut and absorb contact.

Hill once talked about retiring after completing his contract in Miami. That contract ended earlier than planned, and his career could follow it out the door.

Darren Waller has already walked away once

Darren Waller signing with the Carolina Panthers sounded like an intriguing late-summer addition. It could also become the final stop of his unpredictable career.

Waller retired in 2024 before returning with Miami the following year. He flashed some of his old ability, catching six touchdowns, but pectoral and groin injuries limited him to eight games.

The Panthers gave him a one-year deal in August. That short commitment makes sense for both sides, though it also leaves Waller with no security beyond this season.

Retirement is no longer some distant idea for the 33-year-old. He has already experienced life away from football and decided he was comfortable leaving once before. Another injury-plagued season could make the second decision considerably easier.

Carolina does not need Waller to become a long-term building block. The Panthers are hoping he can help now. After that, everyone may shake hands and call it a career.

Za’Darius Smith returned after a painful departure

Za’Darius Smith abruptly retired five games into the 2025 season. He recently explained that his mother’s declining health drove that decision. Her death was followed by the losses of his father and grandmother, leaving Smith in what he described as a dark place.

Football eventually pulled him back. The 33-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons, giving him an opportunity to play closer to his family in Alabama.

His return is an uplifting story. It may not be a long one.

Smith has played for seven teams and endured the physical punishment that comes with more than a decade of chasing quarterbacks. Atlanta needed immediate help after injuries and a suspension thinned its pass-rushing group, but the Falcons did not make a commitment beyond 2026.

Smith could play well and earn another contract. He could also decide that this final opportunity brought him the closure he needed.

The NFL rarely provides clean endings. For these three NFL veterans, retirement could arrive with one more injury, one quiet offseason or one final realization that there is more to life than squeezing out another season.
