Packers gave Jordan Love unusual role in preseason finale

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur later revealed the move wasn’t just for show. He told reporters that he had asked Love to call all of the offensive plays during the second half of Green Bay’s 42-38 comeback win over Arizona.

“Was that not the most entertaining preseason game you’ve ever seen?” LaFleur said during his postgame press conference.

The Packers led 24-20 at halftime when Love took over play-calling duties.

The early returns weren’t great, as the Cardinals scored 11 unanswered points in the third quarter. Arizona took a 38-27 lead via a Kedon Slovis touchdown pass with just under five minutes remaining.

That’s when Love got to work. With Kyle McCord as his on-field avatar, Love orchestrated the Packers’ comeback from the sidelines with two touchdown drives late to secure a come-from-behind victory.

Love even showed some of his coaching intangibles, as evidenced by his sideline interactions with McCord throughout the night.

It’s fitting that Matt LaFleur’s switcheroo with Love came during a game against his brother, Mike LaFleur, who’s entering his first NFL season as the Cardinals’ head coach.

Those were probably the type of backyard shenanigans Matt used to pull on his little brother decades ago. It’s safe to say Matt will be bringing the win up at the Thanksgiving dinner table in a couple of months.
