Chiefs slammed with major injury concern ahead of Week 1

The Kansas City Chiefs have enough on their plate with Patrick Mahomes' injury recovery.

That's why knowing that the guy tasked with protecting his blindside is also dealing with an ailment is a major concern.

Starting left tackle Josh Simmons continues to deal with a back injury, and it's questionable whether he'll be ready to take the field for the season opener.

Following the team's 9-9 tie to the Seattle Seahawks in the preseason finale, head coach Andy Reid shared an unencouraging update on his condition.

The Chiefs say Josh Simmons needs time

“It’s going to take a little bit of time here, but he’s a hard worker when it comes to these type of things,” Reid told the media postgame. “It’s just a matter of eliminating some of the pain that he has and (assessing his) strength. Making sure he has enough strength there.”

While this could simply be a head coach being deliberately vague to avoid tipping his hand ahead of Week 1, it is certainly a major concern.

Simmons showed glimpses of strong play as a rookie but missed time due to an undisclosed personal matter and suffered a season-ending wrist injury.

The Chiefs need to know they can count on their blindside protector, especially given how thin they are in the offensive line.

Left tackle has been a bit of an issue for most of Mahomes' career, and with the Denver Broncos' hard-hitting and bruising front seven waiting for them in Week 1, plus Mahomes just working his way back from a major injury, this could be a huge issue come Sept. 14.
