Bo Bichette shares new admission about early struggles with Mets

New York Mets infielder Bo Bichette previously acknowledged that he felt his slow start to the season contributed to the Mets falling to last place in the National League East standings amid what has become a woeful season for the 61-76 club. 

As MLB insider Chelsea Janes of SNY detailed over the weekend, Bichette recently shared a new admission about making the move to the Big Apple after the 28-year-old played for the Toronto Blue Jays from 2019-25. 

Bo Bichette finally feels he is a good fit with Mets?

"I’ve never been someone that is super open right away," Bichette explained. "But it has definitely been different. In Toronto, for the most part, for six years it was kind of my clubhouse along with [Vladimir Guerrero Jr.]. And so coming here and figuring out where I belong and whose word is the last word and all of that kind of stuff – I was trying to figure it out. But as the season’s gone along, I feel like I fit in where I need to fit in."

Last offseason, Bichette signed a three-year, $126M deal that included opt-outs after the first and second years to join the Mets. He later ended an 0-for-16 slump on June 3, and he has since been a positive for the Mets as both a player and a behind-the-scenes figure. 

Per Baseball Reference, Bichette slashed .304/.344/.467 with an .811 OPS, nine home runs and 38 RBI over his last 74 games through Sunday. 

"I think just one day I kind of let it all go and started playing better," Bichette said about his improved numbers. "I don’t necessarily think I found me for a long time after that. But I was still able to come here and compete and put up numbers, which I was not able to do at the beginning."

On Aug. 20, MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that "the chances for Bo Bichette to opt out with $84M and another opt-out opportunity are zero." Bichette has not yet confirmed that's the case, but young outfielder Carson Benge is among the Mets players who are hoping that Heyman's update proves to be accurate. 

"Obviously, we all want him to stay," Benge said about Bichette. "At the end of the day, it’s his choice, his career. Whatever he chooses, I’ll wish him the best. But we obviously want him to stay."

The Mets may not learn of Bichette's intentions until after they wrap up their season on Sept. 27.
