Vikings, Safety Harrison Smith agree to one-year deal

This latest Minnesota pact is worth $12.25MM, per the NFLN report, although The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero notes its base value is $8MM. Both add that Smith’s earnings for 2026 can increase through incentives. A maximum of $16.25MM in is store for the lifetime Viking. According to Pelissero, $4MM is available in per-game roster bonuses and another $4MM is tied to playoff success. A Super Bowl victory would be needed for the maximum value to be reached.

In March, Minnesota released Smith. That move did not mark a certain end to the 37-year-old’s playing career or the possibility of another Vikings deal being struck, though. Team and player remained in contact with one another throughout the offseason, and Smith is indeed now positioned to play a 15th campaign with the only team of his career.

As of late August, a return was still something to watch for in this case. Head coach Kevin O’Connell continued to speak with Smith about his preparedness to play in what would be his age-37 season. As The Athletic’s Alec Lewis notes, Smith has been staying in shape throughout the offseason. A Vikings return gained steam in recent days, and in time for Week 1 a deal has been struck.

Minnesota’s safety depth chart was already set to include holdovers Josh Metellus and Theo Jackson, but this news will bring about further continuity among defensive regulars. The Vikings also have Jay Ward in the fold, while rookies Jakobe Thomas (third round) and Jacob Thomas (undrafted) both survived roster cuts. That group will now be joined by Smith.

Since arriving in Minnesota as a first-round pick in 2012, Smith has been a foundational member of the team’s secondary. He has accumulated six Pro Bowl nods and a place on two All-Pro teams (first-team in 2017, second-team the following year). After topping 1,000 defensive snaps seven times in his career, Smith was still in a mainstay in 2025 with a snap share of 85%. A similar workload could be in store for the coming season under returning DC Brian Flores.

With 207 regular-season appearances to his name, Smith currently sits fifth in that regard in Vikings history. As long as he plays at least four games in 2026, the Notre Dame product will move into third. Smith saw a downturn in terms of coverage statistics last year, although he still managed a pair of interceptions and 10 pass deflections.

Minnesota entered Saturday with $8.84MM in cap space. This Smith pact will use up a portion of that figure, with the $3MM in dead money generated by his release still on the books as well. After an offseason filled with uncertainty about his future, at least one more NFL campaign is now in store.
