Once again, health is the biggest question mark for Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers.
His team enters the season with some questions around their best players, though it looks like they're trending in the right direction.
Nick Bosa will suit up for the season opener, and it now seems that George Kittle will also be out there.
Addressing the star tight end's situation, offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak revealed that he's looked great in practice and is doing his usual stuff at his usual pace, just months after tearing his Achilles.
“Super impressed with how he’s looked considering the injury he had and how quickly he got back out on the field and just committed to his rehab,” Kubiak said. “...We have got to see how he gets through the rest of the week, we’ve got two more practices, but Kittle looks good.”
Of course, that's great news for a player who suffered a season-ending injury in the playoffs. His recovery timeline is slightly ahead of schedule.
That said, it doesn't mean the 49ers will give him his usual workload against the hard-hitting Los Angeles Rams' defense; that's still to be determined.
“How that affects him on game day and what the workload is will be determined,” the coordinator added.
On paper, the 49ers have everything they need to be a driving force in the NFC. Alas, they've struggled to stay healthy over the past couple of seasons.
And with the most stacked team in the league (Rams) and the reigning Super Bowl champion Seahawks also in the division, the margin for error is pretty narrow in the Bay Area.
As such, probably rushing two of their best players back on the field might not be the wisest idea, though it's not like the 49ers have much of a choice against the Rams.
