Nationals top prospect Eli Willits could reach majors earlier than expected

Eli Willits is expected to be a key part of the Washington Nationals' future. That future came one step closer to reality on Tuesday.

Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic reported that the Nationals have promoted Willits to Double-A Harrisburg. He had been with the High-A Wilmington Blue Rocks, whose season ended on Sunday.

Although Willits will only get another week's worth of action, his performance warranted another step up in competition.

He had posted a .262/.404/.457 batting line in his 521 plate appearances between A-ball and High-A, hitting 13 homers and 26 doubles while stealing 60 bases.

The Nationals are promoting 18-year-old Eli Willits, the No. 1 pick in last year's MLB Draft, to Double-A Harrisburg, per sources.

Willits had an .812 OPS in 64 games with High-A Wilmington, which wrapped its season on Sunday.

The Nationals top prospect, and the fourth-ranked prospect in baseball per MLB.com, Willits is regarded as a true five-tool prospect. A switch hitter, Willits is considered to have an impressive ability to make solid contact, spraying line drives around the ballpark. His speed is also considered to be a plus tool, making him a weapon on the bases while giving him excellent range at short.

While his line drive-oriented approach may cap his home run totals, Willits is regarded as having average power with the potential for more as he gets stronger.

Chances are, Willits will begin the 2027 season back in Harrisburg. However, with a strong start to the season, he could make his Triple-A debut at 19 years old. A key part of the Nationals' future could land in Washington sooner than expected.
