NBA Draft pick could return to college after major NCAA ruling

Purdue’s Trey Kaufman-Renn was selected at No. 59 overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2026 NBA Draft, but he intends to try to play another season in college.

Judge Williams of the Clark County Circuit Court granted Kaufman-Renn a temporary restraining order to allow him to play another season in college in another major ruling.

The NCAA has already seen this take place in college football when a Louisiana judge granted a TRO for several players to return to college despite them spending time on NFL rosters during training camp.

LSU football coach Lane Kiffin has been at the center of controversy after bringing two such players to the program, although neither played in the opener against Clemson.

Kauffman-Renn played four seasons with Purdue, appearing in 147 games and registering 112 starts for the Boilermakers. His best season came in 2024-25 when he averaged 20.1 points per game with 6.5 rebounds.

Kauffman-Renn then appeared in five games for the Timberwolves in the Summer League, although he hasn’t signed a contract with Minnesota yet.

Alabama center Charles Bediako made waves after he played a few games for the Crimson Tide despite previously being in the G League. However, he was later ruled ineligible.

Kauffman-Renn’s case is much different because he was selected in the NBA Draft, and the NCAA confusion takes another turn.
