Oklahoma's John Mateer has bizarre excuse for tough loss to Michigan

The Oklahoma Sooners couldn't get much going in an ugly 17-10 loss to Michigan.

The Wolverines bounced back after their near-upset in Week 1, and the defense kept John Mateer under a ton of pressure from start to finish.

The 22-year-old signal-caller finished the game with 189 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception on a 51.5 percent completion percentage, adding 45 rushing yards on 13 carries. 

He looked out of rhythm and was smothered by the Wolverines' defense. Following the game, he had a rather odd explanation for his subpar performance.

“I think my eyes weren't great,” Mateer said postgame, per On3. “We'll go back and watch it. But I missed a lot of throws that I normally don't miss. Figure out the reason.”

Sam Darnold would be proud of that excuse.

As a team, the Sooners only managed to record 289 yards of offense, 100 of which came on the ground. Notably, Mateer led the team in rushing yards, which speaks volumes about the offensive flow of the game.

The Sooners will have plenty of opportunities to help Mateer get his sight back when they face the New Mexico Lobos in Week 3.

Nevertheless, he'll have to be on his toes in the very next week, as they'll have to deal with the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs for another high-flying matchup.

Anyone can have an off night, and the Wolverines' defense is still one of the best in the nation.

That said, this won't help his case as a projected first-round pick, and he'd better get those eyes checked out soon.
