Bears live up to Ben Johnson's preseason proclamation with win over Panthers

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson said he wants to set NFL scoring records this season. If the Bears' 59-37 season-opening win at the Carolina Panthers on Sunday is any indication of how Chicago will play offensively this year, they have an excellent chance of reaching Johnson's goals.

The 2013 Denver Broncos set the NFL record, scoring 606 points. The 1950 Rams hold the record, averaging 38.8 points per game. Chicago has to average 34.19 PPG in its final 16 games to break Denver's record and 37.5 to eclipse the Rams' record.

The Bears' 59 points on Sunday are the second-most in franchise history in a regular-season game and the second-most by an NFL team in its season opener. The Bears' 552 total yards against the Panthers on Sunday are the fourth-most in franchise history. Chicago set the franchise record with 594 yards in a 61-7 win over Green Bay in 1980.

Caleb Williams threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns and added 10 carries for 65 yards and another two scores. D'Andre Swift had 18 carries for 124 yards and three TDs, and Kyle Monangai contributed 10 carries for 100 yards and one score as the Bears ran for 291 yards.
