Bo Bichette reveals when he will make major career decision

Throughout the summer, New York Mets infielder Bo Bichette had carefully spoken about the opt-out decision that hovers over his status regarding his short-term future. 

Specifically, Bichette signed a three-year, $126M deal that included opt-outs after the first and second seasons to join the Mets this past winter. As Will Sammon of The Athletic shared on Sunday, Bichette likely won't be confirming his plans anytime soon. 

Bo Bichette not yet focused on future beyond 2026

Players with such opt-out clauses in their contracts must decide about those options within five days after the World Series concludes. According to Sammon, Bichette will wait until October before he makes his call. 

"I’m having a great time here," Bichette explained. "I’m enjoying my teammates, and I think that the future here is bright. The team is building something good. There’s a winning atmosphere with veterans who are really great players and young players who are showing they can be winning players on a good team. So that’s exciting for me. But I’m focused on finishing the season strong, and I’ll make that decision when it comes." 

Before Bichette ended a 0-for-16 slump on June 3, it seemed to be a lock that he would stay put through at least the 2027 season. However, he has since adapted to playing for a New York MLB club. According to Baseball-Reference, he slashed .299/.344/.462 with an .806 OPS, 11 home runs and 45 RBI over 86 games from June 3 through Sept. 13. 

Will Bo Bichette stay or go? 

A recent prediction suggested that Bichette will eventually opt out. Sammon seems to disagree with that take. 

"For Bichette, winning matters," Sammon wrote. "The Mets (69-80) are 22-14 since their selloff at the Aug. 3 trade deadline. Between his closeness with rookies Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing and his thoughts about the Mets’ better overall play, Bichette seems like a believer. ...Also, Bichette needed a sizzling summer to end up with average stats and make up for a brutal start. He acclimated to New York. Would he really want to start all over again?"

Sammon was sure to note that "only Bichette would know for sure" what he will do. As for the Mets, they will begin what could be an emotional three-game home series versus the Baltimore Orioles (72-78) on Monday night.
