Mets players send messages to fans about return of Orioles' Pete Alonso

For the first time since he signed a five-year, $155M contract to join the Baltimore Orioles this past MLB offseason, slugger Pete Alonso will return to Citi Field to face the New York Mets as an opposing player when a three-game series involving the clubs gets underway on Monday evening. 

Star shortstop Francisco Lindor was among Mets players who recently sent a message to fans about the reactions Alonso should receive throughout the midweek. 

Pete Alonso "deserves" Mets fans to "go crazy for him" 

"It better be electric," Lindor said, per Dan Martin of the New York Post. "I hope people go crazy for him. He deserves it."

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns not wanting to sign Alonso, a beloved figure among fans of the club, to a big-money, multiyear deal remains one of the more controversial decisions made by Stearns ever since he accepted his current job in October 2023. The Mets will enter Monday night with a record of 69-80, while Alonso slashed .269/.363/.499 with an .863 OPS, 35 home runs and 100 RBI over the first 150 games of his Baltimore tenure. 

"I don’t know how it’s gonna be," Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez said about the greetings Alonso will receive from fans throughout the series. "I hope it’s good for him because he loved New York and our team."

Alonso played only for the Mets from when he made his MLB debut in 2019 through last season. In the summer of 2025, he became the Mets' all-time home run king, and many believe he would have become the greatest offensive player in team history had Stearns and Mets owner Steve Cohen spent the money necessary to keep the "Polar Bear" in Queens. 

Alonso has insisted that he isn't "spiteful" regarding the fact that the Mets reportedly never extended a formal offer to him before he signed with Baltimore. That said, one would think he would love to go deep at least once to reach 300 career home runs at Citi Field. It sounds like Lindor doesn't want Alonso to hit that milestone until after the three-game series wraps up. 

"It will be great to see him, but then, after that, good luck," Lindor added about Alonso. "We’ve got to win. We’ve got to play. I 100 percent want him to do well with [Baltimore]. He was a great teammate. A great person. I wish him nothing but the best, good luck and have fun. Then we’ve got to play."
