The New York Giants are 1-0, and John Harbaugh isn't pretending they played like a finished product. His message on Monday was pretty clear: Do that again next week and the result could look much different.
The Giants beat the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1. Jaxson Dart played well, the running game worked, and Harbaugh walked away with a win in his first regular-season game as New York's head coach.
Then he watched the tape.
"How we played this last night will not win the game next Monday night," Harbaugh said Monday, via the Giants' official YouTube channel. "It won't be good enough."
Harbaugh wasn't looking for one specific reason to complain. He saw a bunch of them.
"There's so many things in that tape as a coach that you just focus on that just have to be better," he said.
That's probably not what players want to hear the morning after a win, but Harbaugh isn't exactly known for handing out September victory laps.
The Giants did enough against Dallas. That's different from doing everything well.
And one problem was especially hard to ignore.
New York put the ball on the ground four times.
The Giants recovered three of them, which kept the problem from wrecking their afternoon. Harbaugh knows that kind of luck isn't something they can count on.
"We're putting the ball on the ground entirely too much," Harbaugh said. "It's got to change."
Then he went a little further.
"The ball's on the ground four times," Harbaugh said. "That's just not even close to being acceptable."
There's his Week 1 reality check.
The Giants won. They also gave Dallas four chances to take the football away and escaped with three of them.
Harbaugh doesn't need his team feeling bad about starting 1-0. He just doesn't want anyone confusing the final score with proof that everything worked.
Dallas didn't make the Giants pay for those mistakes.
Next Monday might be different.
