Andy Green: Jared Young has full use of extremities after collision

Thursday night’s New York Mets-Philadelphia Phillies game featured one of the scariest injuries of the 2026 season. New York first baseman Jared Young appeared to be knocked unconscious in a collision with pitcher Nolan McLean. Young was able to give the fans at Citi Field a thumbs-up as he was carted off the field and transported to a hospital for evaluation.

Interim manager Andy Green provided a fairly encouraging update postgame, most notably revealing that Young has full use of his extremities.

Young is unsurprisingly dealing with “real concussion symptoms” but results of a CT scan at the hospital were negative.

“It feels at this point in time like we’ve avoided the scariest outcomes,” Green said. “That was a terrifying moment on the baseball field. It took him a while to come to, really scary collision.”

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com provided video of the collision immediately after the injury. It occurred in the top of the sixth in an eventual 3-0 Philadelphia win. Justin Crawford hit a slow roller a few feet inside the first base line. Young and McLean got crossed up on who would pursue the ball and who would cover first base. Young got to the bag as the ball was approaching the base and stretched for it while trying to keep his foot on the bag. McLean, who was running in that direction, reached down for the ball at the same time. The pitcher’s leg wound up hitting Young in the side of his head and seemed to immediately knock him unconscious.

This will surely end Young’s season — even a minimal stint on the concussion list would keep him out until the final weekend — but the immediate concerns were obviously beyond baseball. The Mets figure to provide further updates in the next few days.

Young, 31, has been a nice find in a rough year for the Mets, hitting .266/.330/.429 with nine homers across 342 plate appearances. A former 15th round pick who has played for three teams and had a stint in Korea in 2024, Young has earned his first extended big league opportunity this season. Assuming he’s fully healthy going into Spring Training, he should enter camp with a leg up on an Opening Day job as a left-handed bench bat.
