Nuggets may have found a cheap answer to a bigger problem they created

After a bit of a dry spell for the most part this summer, the Denver Nuggets brought in another reinforcement into the fold in the form of Cam Whitmore. As reported by ESPN's Shams Charania, the Nuggets have added the former first-round pick as one of their two-way players with training camp set to open.

Whitmore spent time last season with the Wizards, but played in only 21 games. He was subsequently dealt to the Cavaliers, but he got waived not long after. Now, he gets another shot at staying in the league with the Nuggets, who could definitely use some infusion of youth into their roster.

The addition of the 22-year-old to Denver's lineup is interesting because it gives them a cheap answer to a bigger problem the front office created. After all, the Nuggets have drawn flak in recent years for failing to give Nikola Jokic a more lasting supporting cast whom they can eventually build around in the future.

Just this offseason, the Nuggets lost a highly valued young piece in Peyton Watson, whom they had to part ways with in a multi-team trade due to their inability (or really, refusal) to shell out significant money to keep him as part of their nucleus.

Obviously, given the nature of his deal, there are no guarantees when it comes to Whitmore, who is a career 10.5-point-per-game scorer. Be that as it may, this is undoubtedly a good gamble for the Nuggets. While flawed in other aspects of the game, Whitmore is a great three-level scorer who might just burgeon in the right situation and with the right role.

The Nuggets still have the infrastructure necessary to make their Whitmore gambit worthwhile. They still have one of the best two-way punches in the league and a solid veteran core that is battle-tested in every way. That should be a good formula to help him unlock his promise.
